DIY Packing Tips for Home Sellers: Pack Smart, Move Happy, and Keep Your Sanity

Selling your home is exciting—until you realize every drawer, closet, and cabinet has apparently been collecting belongings since the beginning of time. Suddenly, you are staring at 47 coffee mugs, mystery cords, and a drawer full of keys that open absolutely nothing.

Do not panic! With a little planning, packing can be easier, faster, and far less stressful. Even better, getting an early start can help your home look cleaner, larger, and more appealing to buyers.

1. Declutter Before You Pack

Why pay to move things you no longer want? Before putting anything into a box, sort it into four groups: keep, donate, sell, and toss.

If you have not used it, worn it, or remembered that it existed in the last year, it may not deserve a ride to your new home. Decluttering also makes closets and storage areas appear more spacious during showings. Buyers love storage—and they need to see the space, not your collection of holiday decorations from 1998.

2. Start With the Things You Rarely Use

Begin with seasonal decorations, extra linens, books, keepsakes, formal dishes, and anything else you will not need before moving day. Pack a few boxes each day instead of attempting one giant packing marathon the night before the movers arrive.

A little progress every day keeps the job manageable and greatly reduces the chance of ending up on the kitchen floor eating takeout with a roll of packing tape stuck to your elbow.

3. Create a Packing Station

Choose one area for your boxes, tape, markers, labels, scissors, and packing paper. Keeping everything together saves time and prevents the classic moving-day question: “Who took the tape?”

Use sturdy boxes, and reinforce the bottoms before filling them. Heavy items belong in smaller boxes, while lighter items such as pillows and blankets can go into larger ones. Your back will thank you!

4. Label Every Box Clearly

Write the destination room and a short list of contents on the top and at least one side of every box. For example:

KITCHEN—COFFEE MAKER, MUGS, TOASTER

You can also give each room a different colored label or piece of tape. This helps movers place boxes in the correct rooms and saves you from opening six boxes just to find the coffee maker. Coffee is not a luxury on moving day—it is survival equipment.

5. Pack an “Open First” Box

Prepare one clearly marked box or suitcase with everything you will need during your first night in the new home:

• Toilet paper and paper towels
• Phone chargers
• Medications
• Basic toiletries
• A change of clothes
• Bedding and towels
• Pet food and supplies
• Basic tools
• Snacks, bottled water, and coffee supplies

Keep important documents, jewelry, cash, keys, and medications with you rather than putting them on the moving truck.

6. Take Photos Before Disconnecting Electronics

Before unplugging your television, computer, router, or entertainment system, take a quick photo of the cords and connections. That picture can save you from staring at a pile of wires in your new home while questioning every decision you have ever made.

Place cords and small parts in labeled zipper bags. Tape each bag to the matching item or keep all electronic accessories together in one clearly marked container.

7. Protect Breakables Without Overspending

Wrap fragile items with packing paper, bubble wrap, towels, washcloths, or clean socks. Plates are less likely to break when packed vertically, like records, instead of stacked flat.

Fill empty spaces so items cannot shift, but do not overpack boxes. If a box rattles when you gently move it, add more padding. If lifting it requires three adults and a motivational speech, divide the contents into smaller boxes.

8. Photograph Valuable Items and Furniture

Take photos of valuable belongings and the condition of larger furniture before moving day. This gives you a visual inventory and can be helpful if something is damaged or misplaced.

Measure large furniture and the doorways at your new home, too. It is much easier to make a plan before moving day than to discover your favorite sofa has decided it will not be entering through the front door.

9. Do Not Pack Cleaning Supplies Too Early

Keep a small cleaning kit available for last-minute touch-ups and the final cleanout. Include trash bags, paper towels, an all-purpose cleaner, a broom, a dustpan, sponges, and a vacuum.

10. Make a Moving-Day Plan for Children and Pets

Moving day can be chaotic, especially with open doors, stacked boxes, and people coming and going. Arrange a safe, quiet place for children and pets—or ask a trusted friend or family member to keep them entertained.

This protects little feet, paws, and tails while allowing the movers to work safely. Dachshunds, in particular, have a special talent for being exactly where your feet are about to land!

Fun Fact

Cardboard boxes were originally used to package lightweight goods such as cereal, but corrugated cardboard eventually became a moving-day superstar because it is lightweight, stackable, and surprisingly strong. In other words, your moving box has a longer résumé than most people realize!
